New York St Patrick's Day Parade
Whenever there's a large scale public event or party anywhere in the United States then you can pretty much guarantee that one city that will be striving to do it bigger and better than anywhere else is New Orleans, and when it comes to the US Independence Day on the 4th July then you will certainly find no exception.
The big party is known as Go Fourth on the River, and as the title suggests is centred on the riverfront areas.
The entire city of New Orleans joins in the party and crowds travel from hundreds of miles in every direction to hit the city's iconic French Quarter and watch the spectacular fireworks over the magnificent Mississippi River.
The river is obviously the focal point of the party and the Riverwalk will be packed with crowds throughout the July 4 week, with the local bars, hotels and restaurants offering plenty of special deals to capitalise on the busy period - busy is very much the key word here though, so if you are heading to New Orleans on this week then make sure you make your reservations well in advance!
The main fireworks display gets underway at around 9pm and is launched from 2 barges (known as the "Duelling Barges" - I think that's fantastic!) moored on the Mississippi, so anywhere along the riverfront should secure you a pretty good view. A popular venue is Woldenburg Park, where families tend to take their blankets to settle in for the evening and enjoy the show.
Head to Crescent Park in the French Market District for the 4th Fest, with Jamaican Me Breakfast Club performing at 6.30pm and Big 6 Brass Band at 7.45pm, finished off with the Go 4th on the River Foreworks Display Watch Party at 9pm.
One of the absolute best ways to see the fireworks in New Orleans has to be from the river itself, and there are several local companies offering special 4th July Cruises - we especially like the look of this one onboard the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler to bring a real traditional feel to the occasion. The famous Steamboat Natchez is also always a popular choice.
Live streaming of the 4 July fireworks this year will hopefully be by WWL via their website:
One area New Orleans excels in is the positioning of some excellent webcams at key points throughout the city and on the river, so you'll be sure to see some great views of the party and fireworks here:
If you're in New Orleans for the 4th July party then it is advisable to book your accommodation as early as you can. You can search for hotels, check availability and make reservations for local hotels here.
