Ramadan is one of those events I grew up in almost total ignorance of - I had heard of it obviously but had little understanding of the significance or observation, beyond some rudimentary idea that there was a fair amount of fasting involved.
This was mainly due to growing up in a town and area where there were few, if any that I can recall, Muslims, so it just wasn't something you would encounter on a regular basis. It was only moving further away form home to college, and later work that I finally had some Muslim friends enter my sphere of awareness and actually gained more of an understanding of the event and what it involves for those practicing the faith.
For those who don't know, Ramadan lasts a full calendar month and during this period the main stipulation for those observing it is fasting between dawn and sunset - which might be tough enough in Mecca and other equatorial locations, but in summer on the UK can be a very long period of time believe me! There are also increased prayers daily, leading up to the festival of Eid ul-Fitr, which translates literally as "breaking of the fast" and marks the end of Ramadan.
Ramadan 2023 will begin Sunday Evening 10th March to Tuesday Evening of 9th April.
The dates and times of the start of Ramadan change each year as it is determined by the position of celestial bodies, which obviously alter position over time.
I was initially surprised to see live online streaming available from actually inside the Mecca Kaaba and the coverage is fascinating. There are actually several different views available - check out these sites in particular:
There is also a Youtube channel that uploads the highlights from previous days in case you miss any of the live coverage:
If you're in Mecca during Ramadan and looking for somewhere to stay there is a perhaps surprising number of hotels in the area. You can search for hotels, check availability and make reservations for local hotels here.
