New York St Patrick's Day Parade
A solar or lunar eclipse is one of those rare natural events that
attracts interest around the world, with a fascination that goes right
back to the earliest days of humanity, where the event would be variously
interpreted by ancient civilisations as representing the will of whichever
deity they were embracing at the time.
I remember my first
solar eclipse as a young child, watching through a chunk of welding
glass provided by my Grandad with the usual exhortations to never look
directly at the sun, sage advice that a worrying number of people continue
to ignore.
The total eclipse is obviously the ultimate, casting darkness over the earth during daytime hours, and if you can get to somewhere where one of these is due to take place then I highly recommend you do so.
The schedule for global solar and lunar eclipses throughout 2021 is as follows:
26 May 2021: Total lunar eclipse
10 June 2021: Annular solar eclipse
19 November 2021: Partial lunar eclipse
4 Dec 2021: Total solar eclipse
20 Apr 2023: Total solar eclipse
Live streaming is regularly provided of solar eclipse events these days, especially the more prominent events, with the like of NASA having coverage via their websites. We'll provide the relevant links here as soon as they become available.
Latest: Watch the September Lunar eclipse and Supermoon here.
