Wings for Life World Run: Running for those who can't.
This event caught my eye and I knew it was something I had to share with those of you have never heard of it. It's a race with a quirky difference.
First off, there is no finishing line, when you take part you are, for all intents and purposes, being chased by a "Catcher Car" which has, in the past, featured some well known drivers, including David Coulthard, Felix Baumgartner (a hero of mine!), Cyril Despres and Mark Webber and when it overtakes you, you're effectively OUT until only one runner is left, so there isn't even a set distance for the run, you just keep moving until you are caught.
With a few different ways of being involved, it's a global race that makes it so easy for anyone and everyone to be involved in.
There are 34 official locations across the world and 100,000 participants who will all set off at exactly the same time. Half an hour later the catcher cars are released at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour (9.32 miles per hour) and then they will steadily increase that speed (exactly the same speed in every catcher car across the world) until every runner is caught.
Secondly, if you are not near one of these locations, do not fear, you can take on the Selfie Run, where you just download an App and you can run with everyone else, only you have a "virtual" Catcher car.
The whole event has been finely honed with the latest in technology so that the race is fair and everyone is tracked across the globe.
Oh and did I mention it's all for a fantastic cause - Spinal Cord Research
Most of the races are also available to Wheelchair participants apart from India and Taiwan.
The Wings for Life World Runs this year will be taking place on Sunday 7th May 2023.
