Throughout August all across mainland Europe there are a number of super-festivals taking place, huge, multi day events that bring stellar lineups of dozens of acts to countries right across the content. Some of the locations are more obscure than others, a case in point being the fantastically named Pukkelpop festival in Belgium's Hasselt, a place you've almost certainly never heard of if you're not Belgian or a big festival fan!

Pukkelpop has been taking place since 1985 (although there have been a couple of year breaks) and has grown massively over that time, with the most recent incarnations attracting almost 200,000 visitors over the 3 days of the festival.

As opposed to some of the techno and electronic music focused festivals that are popular in much of continental Europe (the Germans in particular absolutely love that stuff!) the Pukkelpop festival offers a much more eclectic musical selection, with top name acts from the world of pop, dance hip-hop and rock as well as the obligatory electronica. Known for a tragedy in 2011 when torrential rain led to the collapse of one of the festival tents which sadly led to 5 fatalities the Pukkelpop event is looking to bounce back in style and re-establish itself in the upper echelons of the summer festival circuit.

TV & Live Streaming

In line with many of the other large summer music festivals, the Pukkelpop festival offered streaming live online coverage for the first time in 2013, this can be hit and miss, so check out their Facebook page for last minute streams: Pukkelpop

Hotels and Accommodation

A big part of the Pukkelpop experience is the huge campground, with the majority of visitors choosing to spend the weekend under canvas. You can find all the information about camping here.
