Big Sur Marathon 2023

With an epic course, the Big Sur marathon, or to give it's full title the Big Sur International Marathon, commonly abbreviated to BSIM, takes place in late April each year along the Pacific Coast of California, through the picturesque region of Big Sur. In addition to the marathon there is a 21 mile or 35k event on the same date, as well the 12k, 11 miler and 5k events.

There is also a Big Sur half marathon race, but this takes place later in the year, usually in October and is also a very popular and well attended road race event.

This is a very popular marathon event, thanks in no small part to the picturesque rural course and stunning Pacific Ocean views along the route, and the usually mild and sunny weather characteristic of the California coast at this time of year. It has the added bonus of also being a Boston marathon qualifying event.

Date

The Big Sur marathon will take place on 30th April 2023.

Start time

The race gets underway at 6.35am and officially ends at 1pm.

Marathon course

The course for the Big Sur marathon is pretty straightforward, starting just south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and travelling along the coast on Highway 1 to the finish line at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Carmel.

The course is a pretty tough one, with some fairly steep climbs, especially up to Hurricane Point at 560ft.
