The Daytona 500 2024 is fast approaching. This annual event at the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona, Florida sees millions tuning in to watch on TV and on the live stream online. This year sees a pre-race show with Pitbull!

The 500 in the name comes from the distance covered, a total of 500 miles broken down into 200 x 2.5 mile laps. The Daytona 500 is one of the most prestigious events on the NASCAR calendar, and in terms of international recognition is probably comparable only to the Indy 500 in Indianapolis.

The race takes place at the Daytona International Speedway circuit on the appropriately named Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach, Florida and takes place near the end of February each year; in many parts of the country this might lead to concerns about the weather but Florida usually offers suitably clement conditions. The race is televised across the country, regularly featuring in the top viewed sporting events on the US annual calendar.

The Daytona 500 event is about much more than just the race itself, with fans turning up many hours in advance to enjoy the building atmosphere along with plentiful food and drink plus live music and pre-race entertainment. In fact for many people the buildup lasts the entire week, with the qualifying races starting the weekend before the big race and continuing throughout the week. All in all it represents an excellent opportunity to take a weeks holiday down on the beautiful Florida coast.
