F1 Grand Prix live streaming and TV broadcast schedule
New York St Patrick's Day Parade
I'm pretty sure everyone has their favourite snooker player, especially if
it's from watching as a kid. My favourite was Stephen Hendry, but only
because his grandparents would go to the ex-servicemen's bar my nan
worked in and got me a signed photo when I was about 10 and with him
being an Edinburgh lad, it was inevitable. Then of course came Ronnie
O'Sullivan and he was such a great character and watching him play was
always entertaining.
The World Championships is what every
snooker fan looks forward to every year. Starting way back in
1927 and first won by Joe Davis, the competition offers the very best
players from all over the world the chance to win the coveted World
Snooker Championship trophy. The prize money isn't too bad either!
It's a knock-out competition, starting with 32 players who have qualified
and over the course of 17 days the very best of the best will play to
win the prestigious award of World Champion. To date Stephen Hendry
holds the record of winning (modern era) 7 times in the 1990's
alongside Ronnie O'Sullivan, followed
closely by Steve Davis and Ray Reardon who have
all won 6.
The event has taken place at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield since
1977 and every year over 400 million people watch this top sporting
event.
Ooh and a little superstition: There is apparently
a Crucible Curse where no first-time snooker world champion has retained
the title the following year, since the tournament moved to the Crucible
Theatre in 1977!
The World Championships in 2023 are once again at the Crucible in Sheffield, from Saturday 15th April until Monday 1st May.
