Taking part in the Venice marathon means you can run one of the most scenic marathon courses anywhere in the world, that takes thousands of athletes on a course that ends on the iconic island of Venice itself, running alongside the picturesque lagoon.
As a regular visitor to Venice this would have to be one of my top
choices for a European marathon with some of the most amazing scenery
possible, including such highlights as the Grand Canal and St Marks
Square.
The marathon, known locally as Maratona di Venezia,
has been taking place each year since 1986. It is regarded as a relatively straightforward course, being
mostly flat and is particularly popular with African athletes, who have
won most of the recent races.
The Venice marathon in 2023 takes place on Sunday 22nd October
The Venice marathon course starts in the small town of Stra, approximately
25km to the west of Venice, and then progresses as follows:
- Riviera del Brenta
- Marghera
- Mestre
- San Giuliano Park
- Liberty Bridge
- Giudecca Canal
- Punta della Dogana
- Grand
Canal (crossing on a specially built pontoon bridge)
- Piazza San
Marco
- Palazza Ducale
- Finish line at Riva Sette Martiri

Accommodation in Venice is pricey at the best of times, so we recommend you make your reservation as early in advance as possible. You can save quite a bit by staying just a little further out and communtin inot Venice using the excellent train system. We recommend nearby Padova as a lovely place to stay, or just a little further away Verona is an excellent choice.
You can check availability and make reservations for local hotels here.
